Shalaa back on top of Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt standings & eight European Group Ones this weekend will bring more changes

Shalaa (96) has regained the advantage at the head of the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt category following an all-the-way success in the Group One Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, September 26.

The Al Shaqab-owned colt was heralded by John Gosden as “the fastest juvenile I have trained” when following up victory in the Group One Darley Prix Morny with a comfortable half-length verdict from Buratino (40) over six furlongs of the Rowley Mile. It was the son of Invincible Spirit’s fifth consecutive success and he leads from Air Force Blue (72) in the fight for the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award.

Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting also saw significant change in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly standings as Lumiere (40), owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and trained by Mark Johnston, bravely beat Illuminate (40) and Besharah (44 and the new leader) to throw the division wide open.

The 25th annual Cartier Racing Awards will be presented at a glittering ceremony before an invited audience of 300 at the Dorchester Hotel, London, England, on the evening of Tuesday, November 10.

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing. In addition to the eight equine awards, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 17-strong Cartier Jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

European horseracing’s top awards are delivered through a tried and tested combination of points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout 2015 (30%), combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists (35%) and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph plus Channel 4 Racing viewers (35%).

Golden Horn (184), also trained by John Gosden, continues to head both the Cartier Horse Of The Year and Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt categories. Anthony Oppenheimer’s homebred is set to bid for a fourth Group One success of 2015 in the Group One Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, France, on Sunday, October 4.

His main rival in France’s autumn showpiece is the brilliant mare Treve (80), who is bidding to become the first horse to win the great race three times. Treve, trained by Criquette Head for Al Shaqab Racing, has already enjoyed Cartier Awards accolades, being named Cartier Three-Year-old Filly and Cartier Horse Of The Year in 2013. She will gain 48 points if successful in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, closing the gap considerably, and then it will be up to the Cartier panel of journalists and the votes from Channel 4 viewers and readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph for her to make further progress in the battle for more Cartier Racing Awards glory.

A magnificent weekend’s racing in Paris will have a major bearing on the Cartier Racing Awards, with seven Group One races staged on Sunday (October 4). The Qatar Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp could feature leading Cartier Sprint contenders Mecca’s Angel (40), Muthmir (40) and Sole Power (40), all seeking to make inroads into the advantage held by Muhaarar (96) who is being kept for QIPCO British Champions Day, while the Qatar Prix du Cadran could see a shake-up in the open Cartier Stayer category.

The Total Prix Marcel Boussac and the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere are perennially won by leading Classic contenders for the following year, while a superb card also features the Prix de l’Opera Longines and the Qatar Prix de la Foret.

Newmarket’s autumn season has already produced some scintillating performances and the Group One Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes takes place at the course on Saturday (October 3), in which Esoterique (92) could bid to enhance her tally in the Cartier Older Horse standings which is headed by Solow on 152.

The Suffolk venue also hosts the Dubai Future Champions Festival on October 9 & 10, which is due to feature the highly-anticipated clash between Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt challengers Air Force Blue (72) and Emotionless (16), before attention turns to the brilliant QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on October 17 and the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland, USA, on October 30 & 31.

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, commented: “With autumn in the air, the big end-of-season finales of the Flat season are now approaching thick and fast.

“We have witnessed brilliant performances throughout the year and all the ingredients are there for a magnificent climax to the Cartier Racing Awards.”
