Raymond Mould remembered at Cheltenham Racecourse with a race at The International next month

The late Raymond Mould will be remembered at The International with a race named in his honour on the second day of next month’s meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse.

The Raymond Mould Memorial Novices’ Chase (12.40pm), staged over an extended two and a half miles, takes place on Saturday, December 12.

Mould, who died aged 74 on September 14 this year, was one of the leading owners in Jump racing.

Along with his late wife Jenny and widow Caroline, he was involved with seven winners at The Festival in March as well as enjoying lots more success at the Home of Jump Racing.

The first Festival victory came with Charter Party, who landed the feature Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1998, while the incomparable Sprinter Sacre, who carried the colours of Caroline Mould, provided success in both the 2012 Racing Post Arkle Chase and the 2013 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase in March.

Tipping Tim, in the colours of Jenny Mould, captured what is now the Paddy Power Gold Cup in 1992 for Nigel Twiston-Davies who trained many of the Mould horses including Grade One scorer Bindaree – winner of the 2002 Grand National at Aintree.

Other good horse owned included Grade One winners Mister Morose and Barton Bank, plus Grade Two scorers Knowhere and Pigeon Island.

The commercial property investor and developer was based close to Cheltenham Racecourse for 30 years, after moving to the Cotswolds in 1985.

In the words of Sprinter Sacre’s trainer, Nicky Henderson, Raymond Mould was a man who “loved racing, loved people and loved to party”.

Caroline Mould, who is sponsoring the December 12 contest, commented: “Raymond loved going racing at Cheltenham and, of course, he was associated with many winners there over the years.

“Cheltenham was also very much his local course and to have a race run there in his honour is a very fitting memorial.”

The two feature races on Saturday, December 12 at Cheltenham are the £100,000 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, a handicap chase run over two miles, five furlongs which has attracted an excellent entry of 41, and the £130,000 StanJames.com International Hurdle over two miles and one furlong. Total prize money of £363,000 is offered on the day.

Simon Claisse, Regional Director of Racing, Jockey Club Racecourses South West, & Clerk of the Course, Cheltenham, commented: “We are very much looking forward to The International at Cheltenham on Friday and Saturday, December 11 and 12 with total prize money of £524,000.

“Raymond Mould was a great supporter of racing at Cheltenham, the Home of Jump Racing, and we would like to thank Caroline for backing a race in his memory at The International.

“Following on from the record attendance at The Open earlier this month and the official opening of The Princess Royal Stand, part of our well-received £45-million redevelopment which is fully completed, we offer excellent racing during The International, with an especially strong programme of races on the Saturday.”
