Caravaggio tops 82 entries for At The Races Champagne Stakes at Doncaster

Aidan O’Brien dominates the 82 entries for the Group Two At The Races Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on the final day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, Saturday, September 10.

Ireland’s champion Flat trainer accounts for 20 entries in total led by the unbeaten Caravaggio, who extended his winning sequence to three with a scintillating display in the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

O’Brien has also engaged fellow Royal Ascot scorer Churchill, who followed up in the Group Three Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown last week, yesterday’s Goodwood G2 winner War Decree, Group Two July Stakes runner-up Intelligence Cross and recent G3 Anglesey winner Peace Envoy who beat Psychedelic Funk (Ger Lyons).

Mehmas tops eight entries for trainer Richard Hannon. The son of Invincible Spirit was put in his place by Caravaggio at Royal Ascot but bounced back to beat Intelligence Cross by a half-length in the July Stakes at Newmarket and runs tomorrow in the G2 Qatar Richmond Stakes at Goodwood.

Godolphin, successful in four of the last seven runnings of the At The Races Champagne Stakes, has nine colts engaged. They include Group Two Superlative Stakes scorer Boynton and the unbeaten Blue Point (both Charlie Appleby), who sprinted to an 11-length victory in a six-furlong novice stakes at Doncaster on July 14.

Kevin Ryan’s four entries are headed by two colts who have already acquitted themselves well at Group Two level. Broken Stones stayed on to take third behind Mehmas and Intelligence Cross at Newmarket, while Dream Of Dreams filled the same position behind Medicine Jack in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh on June 25.

Dream Of Dreams was purchased by leading owner Saeed Suhail following a promising debut at Newmarket and got off the mark next time out in a six-furlong maiden at Haydock Park on May 27.

Bruce Raymond, racing manager for Saeed Suhail, commented: “We are pleased with Dream Of Dreams. I saw Kevin yesterday and he has been very happy with the horse’s progress since Ireland.

“It was a good effort at the Curragh, although I think he needs to settle a little bit more. He missed the start and that seemed to cost him but it proved he is a good horse.

“He is on schedule to go to York next, most likely for the Gimcrack Stakes, and that should tell us more.”

Frankel has made an excellent start to his career at stud and is well represented, including Seven Heavens (John Gosden). The 650,000-guineas purchase repelled Lockheed (William Haggas) by a length to win in a six-furlong maiden at Ascot on July 8.

The scratchings deadline for the At The Races Champagne Stakes is at noon on Tuesday, August 23.

There is a £7,500 supplementary entry stage on Monday, September 5 and a maximum field of 22 is allowed.
