Captain primed for Ladbrokes Mile

Irish handler Tracey Collins has Captain Joy exactly where she wants him a week ahead of the £150,000 Ladbrokes Mile at Lingfield Park on All-Weather Championships Finals Day, Good Friday, April 3.

The six-year-old is 6/1 third favourite with the sponsor and is coming in on the back of an odds-on second, beaten a half-length, to Paene Magnus in a Fast-Track Qualifier at Dundalk, Ireland, on March 6.

Captain Joy had previously reeled off a hat-trick of wins on the All-Weather, annexing a pair of Dundalk handicaps before a decisive victory under Pat Smullen over Alfred Hutchinson (Geoff Oldroyd) in a Fast-Track Qualifier at Lingfield Park on January 10.

Collins reported: “Captain Joy has come out of his last race very well and is exactly where I want him.

“It was a hell of a race at Dundalk and I was very happy with the performance. I’m expecting improvement, but don’t take anything away from Mr Bolger’s horse (Paene Magnus). He is a multiple Listed winner and a very good horse in his own right.

“I think Captain Joy is going to Lingfield with a good each-way chance. He is in really good shape but, as you would expect with all that money on offer, it is shaping up to be a very competitive race.

“The draw can be important, especially in a race as tight as this, and I hope we get a favourable stall.”

Collins also confirmed that Smullen, seven-time Irish champion jockey, will take the ride on Good Friday.

There are 22 engaged in the Ladbrokes Mile and Sovereign Debt (David Nicholls) is the 4/1 favourite after beating Chookie Royale (8/1, Keith Dalgleish) in the Listed Ladbrokes Lady Wulfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton on March 7.

That same fixture also saw Mindurownbusiness (5/1) record his second victory from three starts for Roger Varian in the Ladbrokes Lincoln Trial.

The only horse among the entries not quoted with Ladbrokes is Sloane Avenue (Jeremy Noseda), who is set to run in this weekend’s Group Two Godolphin Mile at Meydan, Dubai.

Six-day confirmations for All-Weather Championships Finals Day will be revealed tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, March 28.

Ladbrokes Mile – sponsor bet: 4/1 Sovereign Debt; 5/1 Mindurownbusiness; 6/1 Captain Joy; 8/1 Chookie Royale; 12/1 Big Baz; 14/1 Grey Mirage, Santefisio, Solar Deity; 16/1 Alfred Hutchinson, Lunar Deity, Lamar, Tigers Tale; 20/1 Melvin The Grate, Tenor; 25/1 Don’t Call Me, Foxtrot Romeo, Haaf A Sixpence, If We Can; 33/1 Capo Rosso, Realize; 66/1 Presumido

Horses qualify for the seven championship contests on the £1.1-million All-Weather Championships Finals Day (Good Friday, April 3, 2015) by winning a specified “Fast Track Qualifier” or running in a minimum of three races at Britain’s five All-Weather tracks, Lingfield Park, Southwell and Wolverhampton, owned by ARC, The Jockey Club’s Kempton Park and Chelmsford City, between October 30 and March 30.

Alternatively, one of the three qualifying runs can come at Dubai’s Meydan Racecourse (dirt) or on the All-Weather surfaces at Ireland’s Dundalk and the French tracks of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Chantilly and Deauville.
