Appleby bids for more Fast-Track success with Portamento at Wolverhampton on Saturday

Newmarket trainer Charlie Appleby is aiming for a third Fast-Track Qualifier success of this season’s All-Weather Championships with Portamento lining up in the £20 Risk-Free Bet At Unibet Conditions Stakes (6.45pm) at Wolverhampton on Saturday, December 6.

The five-furlong Tapeta contest is the first Fast-Track Qualifier for the new Three-Year-Old Sprint category with the winner automatically gaining a place in the £150,000 Unibet All-Weather Championships Three-Year-Old Sprint Final over the same distance at Lingfield Park on Good Friday, April 3, 2015.

Portamento is enjoying a highly successful juvenile campaign, winning three times including a front-running success by four lengths over leading 2,000 Guineas contender Estidhkaar in a Goodwood six-furlong maiden in May.

The Godolphin two-year-old also made all in a five-furlong Polytrack conditions race at Lingfield Park in August and scored by 10 lengths in a similar style over six furlongs back on turf at Haydock Park in October.

Adam Kirby partners the Shamardal colt for the first time at Wolverhampton on Sunday evening.

Appleby, who has already won All-Weather Championships Fast-Track Qualifiers with Tearless and Four Seasons, commented: “Portamento is in good nick and is clear of his rivals on the ratings.

“He is a horse we have earmarked for Finals Day on Good Friday and looks like the one to beat on Saturday.

“He has won over five furlongs before and shows a lot of speed in his work at home. I think that five furlongs on Tapeta around Wolverhampton will suit him – he can be ridden positively.

“He has been on the go since April but we gave him a little break after Royal Ascot. He is a typical sprinter in that we don’t do a lot with him between runs and we are very happy with his condition at the moment.

“The aim is to qualify him and then put him away for the winter. He probably wouldn’t run again before Good Friday, providing he can win at Wolverhampton.”

A field of five for the £20 Risk-Free Bet At Unibet Conditions Stakes also features Polytrack winners Apache Storm (Michael Appleby/Robert Winston) and Shackled N Drawn (Olly Stevens/Graham Lee), plus the Stan Moore-trained pair of Jimmy’s Hall (Stevie Donohoe) and Somedaysrdiamonds (Liam Jones).

Horses qualify for the seven championship contests on the £1.1-million All-Weather Championships Finals Day (Good Friday, April 3, 2015) by winning a specified “Fast Track Qualifier” or running in a minimum of three races at Britain’s five All-Weather tracks, Lingfield Park, Southwell and Wolverhampton, owned by ARC, The Jockey Club’s Kempton Park and Chelmsford City, between October 30 and March 30.

Alternatively, one of the three qualifying runs can come at Dubai’s Meydan Racecourse (dirt) or on the All-Weather surfaces at Ireland’s Dundalk and the French tracks of Cagnes Sur Mer, Chantilly and Deauville.
